One of the most well documented Battery Energy Storage fires was a 2MW system that overheated in Surprise, AZ in 2019. Check out this detailed report of the incident (linked below). What we found interesting, is the way the chemical fire reacted. The highly toxic hazardous gas and vapors emitted from this small battery storage facility hovered at 2-3 feet above the ground and spread over a larger area BEFORE it caught fire. (Shown in photo below) The firemen were trained in HAZMAT conditions but not specific to battery storage. They waited for an extended time until they believed it was safe to enter the container to try to extinguish the overheated batteries. When they opened the door, there was an explosion that ejected a fire captain roughly 70ft from the container. Four firefighters were sent to the hospital with critical injuries from the explosion. The second photo shows the container after the explosion. You can see where it bulges out and the place where the fire captain was ejected to and a bush had caught fire. Now mind you, this is a SMALL system 2MW similar to a shipping container. The one being proposed in our city must be in the 200-300MW range OR LARGER size due it’s large footprint, 32acres. Please spread the word that the City Council will be voting on a battery storage system to be put in Vacaville and speak up about your concerns with this project to the Council.
